Salvation – Gift or Recompense?

Spread the Word!

There are rewards for both righteousness and unrighteousness. There are rewards for the church, for the Jew, and for the nations. Every man will have to give account for his work, and will receive his just reward.

Jesus will bring the rewards with him when he returns

Revelation 22:12 – And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

Rewards are payment for deeds, work, etc… Rewards are earned. We often think of a reward as something pleasant… a treat, but rewards (wages) are not always pleasant.

James 5:3 – Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

Romans 6:23 – For the wages of sin is death; We have reward in heaven for being persecuted for His name:

Matthew 5:12 – Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

There are rewards for giving for the sake love and not to be seen or have the rewards of man…

Matthew 6:4 – That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

There are rewards for praying in earnest and the quietness of our closet…

Matthew 6:6 – But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

There are rewards for fasting humbly to the Lord….

Matthew 6:18 – That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

There are rewards for receiving the prophet and the righteous man of God…

Matthew 10:41 – He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.

There is reward for loving our enemy, doing good, hoping for nothing gained

Luke 6:35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

There is reward for not casting away our confidence….

Hebrews 10:35 – Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.

There is a reward of inheritance…. This is a physical reward of part of a physical kingdom. It is a reward for serving Christ.

Colossians 3:24 – Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

There are rewards for unrighteousness…

Jude 1:11 – Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.

2 Peter 2:13 – And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you

2 Timothy 4:14 – Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works:

We can be beguilled out of our reward and not receive our full reward.

2 John 1:8 – Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.

Colossians 2:18 – Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind

BUT….. As rewards are earned, by every man according to his deeds….

Salvation is a free gift of grace!

Romans 11:6 – And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

It is not given to us because we earned it; Salvation is not recompense….

Ephesians 4:7 – But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

Ephesians 2:8 – For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Jesus paid the price so that we who by faith believe in the power of His sacrifice and the Mercy of the Lord God Almighty who sent him would not receive the wages (recompense, reward, earned wages) of sin.

Romans 6:23 – For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Sin that still lives in our mortal body will reap its wage of death, and our mortal bodies will die…. but the second death has no power over us as earned the wages of sin for us…a propitiation for us.

We can lose many rewards, as our works become just so much stubble in the purifying fire…but for those who believe in Christ the reward of sin does not belong to us, it was already given to Christ in our place, Christ who did not sin took our reward (recompense, earned wage) for sin.

This gift of salvation is ours from the time we first believe. The Holy Spirit is our down payment of this gift here on earth….

Ephesians 1:13 – In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

The gifts of God are not taken back…

Romans 11:29 – For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

The works righteousness, by a Christian, are our reasonable service… They are expected… To whom much is given, much is required!!!!

Romans 12:1 – I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

We will receive rewards for our reasonable service or lack thereof, but again, a reward is earned; salvation (eternal Life) is a GIFT an un-deserved, un-earned GIFT freely given of Grace ALONE.
